EV owners' golden egg: Charging companies harvest millions – but who gets the money?
Jyllands-Posten reveals: Energinet paid 2.1 billion DKK for balancing the electricity grid in 2025. Charging companies are collecting a growing share of that money — but very few of them share it with the EV owners who actually make it possible.
The hidden value in your parked EV
When your EV is plugged in at home, its battery and flexible charging schedule are valuable to the power system. Grid operators pay for so-called balancing services: the ability to move consumption up or down at short notice to keep the grid stable.
Smart charging providers aggregate thousands of home chargers and sell this flexibility to Energinet. In 2025 alone, Energinet paid around 2.1 billion DKK for balancing the Danish grid.
Who pockets the money?
Here is the uncomfortable part: in most cases, the charging company keeps the profit. The EV owner — whose car, charger and patience make the whole thing possible — typically sees none of it.
We do it differently
enkel energi is one of the few companies that shares the gains directly with EV owners:
- Smart Charge price guarantee: you are always settled at the price of the cheapest hours in your charging window — no matter when the car actually charges
- 10 øre/kWh charging discount on top, every time you charge via the enkel app
- No markup on the spot price — our earnings come from trading smartly in the market, not from your bill
Your EV is a golden egg. We believe you should be the one who benefits from it.
