Charging war shifts gear: enkel energi pays EV owners to charge at home

Jyllands-Posten has featured enkel energi as the first Danish provider to offer EV owners a direct cash benefit for charging at home. An FDM expert calls it "a huge piece of news" for Danish EV owners.

What's new?

Competition among Danish electricity companies for EV customers has mostly been about slightly lower subscriptions or small spot-price markups. enkel energi changed the game:

  • 10 øre/kWh charging discount — 10 øre off per kWh you charge at home via Smart Charge in the enkel app (compatible charger and car required)
  • Smart Charge price guarantee — your charging is always settled at the price of the cheapest hours in your charging window
  • Combined with spot prices without any markup, home charging becomes cheaper than anywhere else

Why can we pay you to charge?

When your car charges intelligently, it creates value in the power system: consumption moves to hours with surplus (often renewable) electricity, and the grid is balanced. Most companies keep that value. We share it with you — that's what the charging discount is.

What the experts say

FDM — the Danish motorists' association — highlighted the offer as a significant shift: for the first time, a Danish supplier passes the flexibility value of smart charging directly back to the consumer.

For a typical EV owner driving 15,000–20,000 km a year, the discount plus Smart Charge savings add up to thousands of kroner annually.
